In laser cladding, a coating is welded onto a workpiece with a laser beam. A weld pool is created on a workpiece surface with a precisely focused laser beam. Powdered filler metal is simultaneously injected into the weld pool to melt completely into a weld bead lying on the workpiece surface. By applying overlapping weld beads, a crack- and pore-free coating is achieved with a fine, homogeneous microstructure and a 100% density that is completely metallurgically bonded to the workpiece. Due to the low heat input and high process stability, laser cladding is a cost-effective way to extend the service life of business-critical parts with welded coatings, with layer thicknesses from 0.1 to a few millimeters.
